Project Description:

Re-Roof for Hillsborough County School: Students, Safety and Scheduling are top priorities.

When Hillsborough County Schools and their Construction Management companies, C.B. Goldsmith & Associates and RW Tymewell, called upon Springer-Peterson to be part of the dream team to solve a leaky roof situation, we were thrilled to come in and help. As a preferred vendor of Hillsborough County Schools, we’ve had a track record of success in providing roofing solutions to their schools.

In this situation, the roof at Summerfield Elementary had been leaking and needed a quick yet quality solution. A Modified Bitumen torch-applied roof using modified roofing felts was the right-fit solution for this job.

Problem

With schools, there are students and therefore the safety of all students is the #1 priority. Roof access was restricted because of student traffic so we needed to find alternate ways to do the necessary work. Ladders couldn’t be used due to the student traffic.

Another aspect of this project worth mentioning was that the set-up for the equipment and tools was located in the back of the building.

A final point is that we wanted little to no damage to landscaping during this re-roofing project.

Solution

For the roof access issue, we decided to erect a spare tower to go back and forth on the roof. Since ladders couldn’t be used, we used this tower and secured the bottom 10 ft. of the tower with a cage.

We also worked during the night or weekends since students were not there during the off-hours. In working this alternate schedule, we set up lighting as necessary. This way, there was no interference with student life.

With the set-up being in the back of the building, we were able to bring the materials from the back to the front, despite the road being there. The extra work was part of this job and we rose up to this challenge to make it work.

As for the landscaping, it was all kept in-tact as we used the crane for the removal of the existing roof so it wouldn’t tear up any of the beautiful landscaping.

To sum it up, this re-roofing project got an A+. It was done in a timely fashion with a very detailed application. All parties were ultra-satisfied with the results.

Details of this project: We tore off to the metal deck. Installed 3.5 inch ISO with crickets between the drain. We put ½ inch densdeck (similar to sheet rock) and all insulation was attached to the metal deck. We installed a two-ply GAF torch applied system. Including all new aluminum coping cleats and scuffers. With the copers, all the aluminum mitres had to be welded, which is rarely done.
